Laurel’s face paled. “Who is the her he’s referring to? You or me?”

Mal’s brow furrowed. “At first, I thought it was you because you’re my closest female friend. The message is in my living room which, to me, means the you he’s referring to is me. But now, I’m not so sure.”

The sheriff balanced his hands on his hips. “I’m leaning toward both women as the targets. Especially since their homes were vandalized.” Faulkner tipped his head toward Mal and then Laurel. Finally, he met Devin’s gaze. “Think about it… Both of their places were broken into, one after the other. The movement of the two photographs at Laurel’s was deliberate. What or who was the common denominator in the two photos?”

Devin’s eyes narrowed. “Me.” One had been a photo of Devin’s family before his parents had passed. It had been moved across the room. The other was of his engagement to Mal. That one had been left facing down.

“No other women have reported a break-in?” Devin asked the sheriff.

“No,” Faulkner answered. “Again…”

Devin nodded. “I’m the common denominator.”

“Mal and I are women you love and care about,” Laurel said softly. “This feels like someone is targeting us to get to you.”

Devin swore and limped the length of the porch and back. “Who has it in for me? I’ve been in Maryland recovering from wounds. Why not get to me then?”

“You were probably surrounded by medical staff or other patients,” Laurel said. “They don’t like to leave you alone while you’re recovering both physically and mentally.”

Devin nodded. A flash of light out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. More headlights appeared on the road leading from the gate to the ranch house.

The sheriff’s eyes narrowed. “Expecting company?” His hand went to the gun on his hip.

“No.” Devin touched Mal’s arm. “You and Laurel might want to wait inside the house.”

“No way.” Mal stood with her feet braced and her arms crossed over her chest.

Laurel stood beside Mal, her chin held high. “Not without you, Devin.”

Devin winced. The last thing he wanted was to feel like he couldn’t protect himself or the women he loved.

“We’re not weak women who need a man to protect us 24/7,” Laurel said. “We might not have equal physical strength, but we’re smart and capable of having each other’s backs.”

Mal nodded with a quick smile. “What your sister said.”

The headlights flashed brightly in their eyes as the vehicle slowed and rolled to a stop in front of the house. When the headlights blinked off, Devin could see a dark truck. The doors opened. The interior lights shined down on the two men inside.

Devin let out the breath he’d been holding. “It’s okay. It’s Jake Cogburn and Max Thornton from the Brotherhood Protectors.”

Thorn grabbed a bag from the backseat and followed Jake to the porch, where they joined Devin, the sheriff, Mal and Laurel.

Jake shook hands with the sheriff and then turned to Devin. “We heard the police scanner mention there’d been a break-in at Mal Watts’s place.
